A Trip Back in Time... August 8 - 14, 2010 -
11th Annual Special Program
During
this week you can walk down to the bend of the river
and enter a special world – an authentic 1850s
Cheyenne camp. There you will find Gray Wolf, a Northern Cheyenne; Shines, his partner or other historians, in their tipi or beside
their campfire surrounded by buffalo hides, tomahawks,
buckskin clothing, lances and other weapons, and all
the other implements of Native American life before
modern technological society changed it all.
At Tipi Camp you will be able to throw tomahawks,
practice your outdoor survival skills, make your own pair of comfortable buckskin
moccasins or a leather pouch, learn a few Pow-Wow steps,
build an arrow and then let it fly, make a choker or necklace, sip pine-needle
tea during “tipi time,” or just sit back
and watch the smoke drift up and out into the sky.
These activities
are in addition to our regular Ranch program that will
still take place as scheduled (horseback riding, nature
walks, river trips, etc.). Adults enjoy quiet
mornings at Tipi Camp before and after their riding,
while youth are busy with their riding and other activities.
In the afternoons, the youth program visits Tipi Camp for activities geared to their level,
while teens and adults often hang out and work on projects
or visit with a historian not busy with kids.
Parents and children visit Tipi Camp together during
late afternoons and some evenings.
Cost: For this week,
all guests ages three and older will have an extra per-person fee added to their week's charges.

Many families have booked again after experiencing this rare glimpse into the past and are happy to give their recommendation! This week tends to fill up quickly -- call for reservations!
NOTE: The production company has many different historians "on call," but at Sylvan Dale Ranch each summer, Gray Wolf is the main host. Shines works behind the scenes in program development and selection of guest historians for those times she is not able to actually help host the event on site.
