Family Vacations are Important
for Two Reasons
Many families will take a vacation this summer, and that’s a good thing. Vacations are important. Some families don’t take family vacations because they view them as an extravagant luxury. This does not have to be the case; there are many low-cost options for vacations, from staying home and taking a week going to local sites (no work allowed), to finding travel bargains on the internet.
Family vacations are important for at least two reasons. The first is that vacations are an opportunity for a family to spend time together. In today’s world of two income parents and children involved in sports, music, and a myriad of other activities, sometimes there is not even time for a family to sit down to dinner together. Families need time together to nurture and enjoy each other. The second reason vacations are important is in giving everyone a time to slow down and relax. Everyone, parents and children alike are under so many daily demands and stresses. A vacation is a time to set those worries aside. (Bold lines are emphasized by the Ranch.)
Of course without some planning and preparation, a family trip could turn out to be anything but a “vacation”! Here are a few tips to consider when preparing for a family vacation:
Plan your vacation as a family and include something for everyone. Take individual attention spans and physical limitations into consideration. Sites that offer learning experiences for the entire family are great vacation choices. Look for zoos, aquariums, and science museums as your destination. All of these will have things to interest all age groups.
With so many different things happening on vacation, it is more important than ever to maintain routines for young children. Do your best to keep mealtimes, naptimes, and playtimes on their normal schedule.
Plane, train, or automobile, be prepared for the time spent riding. Pack nutritious snacks, lots of water and other fluids. The ride is a good time for storytelling or for games like the license plate game and Fortunately-Unfortunately. For these and other games go to Mom’s Minivan. Let each child bring along a favorite toy, book, or video. In addition, pack backup toys and activities, and consider including something that will be new to your child. Find some great choices at Museum Tour.
Be flexible, things will happen you did not plan for. Take a deep breath and remember to enjoy yourself and each other. Happy travels!
