Colorado’s best fishing experience and a chance to enter the 24" Club! Colorado’s best fishing experience and a chance to enter the 24

“With all the comforts of home and true western hospitality, Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch is a favorite destination for fly anglers and nonfishermen alike. With two chains of spring-fed trophy trout lakes and private access on the Big Thompson River, anglers can find solitude and an excellent chance to enter ‘The 24-Inch Club’.”

Fishing Adventures For Summer Guests on 6-night Dude Ranch Package Pond fishing for summer dude guests Fishing Adventures For Summer Guests on 6-night Dude Ranch Package Pond fishing for summer dude guests

It's great to see the delight on children's faces when a 15-inch rainbow trout leaps high in the air at the end of the line — and watch their parents unsuccessfully try to restrain themselves from "helping." Sylvan Dale is a family-friendly ranch where non-anglers, beginners and experienced fly fishers can enjoy themselves.

fly fishing

During our mid-June through August dude ranch season, guests begin the week with a complimentary fly-casting demonstration at 4 p.m. on Mondayafternoon. Adults can become "qualified" for catch-and-release fishing by meeting with the instructor and obtaining a ranch fishing permit. Once qualified, guests are welcome to fly fish the main ranch ponds and the river at any time on a catch-and-release basis, free of charge. (A Colorado State fishing license is required for the river).

Note: Children under 12 are not allowed to catch-and-release fly fish in ranch trout ponds or on the river unless accompanied by a qualified adult.(Sometimes, an exception is made based on the youngster’s skills and maturity.)

Fly Fishing Package (Summer Dude Guests)

Includes half-day lesson and/or guided trip, follow-up fishing access for the all six days, and equipment (rod, waders, float tube).*

fly fishing Instruction

fly fishing lessons at our stocked ponds almost always provide instant gratification for beginners who need reinforcement and encouragement. Intermediate anglers benefit from private lessons by experienced local guides.*

Trophy Trout Fly Fishing

Guests may make arrangements to fly fish our trophy trout lakes in the Big Valley, two miles from the Main Ranch. We provide a guide for the first half-day to help guests become qualified for follow-up visits.*

Bait fishing and spin casting.

Summer guests are also invited to join us for supervised catch-and-keep fishing at our stocked trout ponds on the Main Ranch during certain hours (Ask your coordinator or see the ranch program at check-in.) We clean and prepare the trout for a tasty dinner entrée. In addition, spin casting is available on our Big Valley bass lakes, by special arrangement and sometimes with the Youth Program. Check the schedule. Note: Bait and spin-fishing are never allowed in the river or trophy trout ponds.

Good Luck, and bring your fishing stories to the campfire!

Fly fishing Catch-and-Release

Our private fishing waters include two miles of access to the Big Thompson River, plus five stocked ponds on the Main Ranch, trophy trout lakes in the Big Valley, and several bass ponds. Fishing clubs use the Ranch for outings, and business groups, wedding parties and family reunions often schedule fly fishing lessons or guided fishing excursions for participants. Except as noted below, fly fishing at Sylvan Dale is "catch-and-release." Reservations and a ranch permit are required, and a Colorado fishing license is necessary for river fishing. For your group, we can arrange:

  • Fly Fishing Instruction (beginners and intermediates)
  • Fly Casting Classes
  • Guided Fishing Trips (for individuals or a group)
  • Fly Tying Classes
  • Fly fishing as a team-building experience

Catch-and-Keep Fishing (Groups only)

Limited to the Main Ranch trout ponds. We supply the poles, a fishing attendant, and bait. We will also clean and package your trout for taking home, or by special arrangement we will include trout in group meals. Arrangements can also be made for fishing derbies and other special events.

Fishing Fees are based on the type of fishing (fly fishing or "catch-and-keep"), the hours reserved, the number of people, and the waters used.

An ideal way to mix business and pleasure!

Fishing For Bed & Breakfast Guests Fishing For Bed and Breakfast Guests

Sylvan Dale is a major fly fishing destination for anglers from around the country. Anglers who are Bunk & Breakfast guests may obtain a ranch permit to fish specified waters for an additional daily access fee.

The Big Thompson River and our private trophy trout lakes are available to qualified anglers for fly fishing "catch-and-release" only. Most guests hire a guide for at least a half-day to get qualified to fish on their own for trophy trout. A guide is not necessary for the river, but it’s open only for experienced anglers.

Catch and Keep bait fishing and spin casting are allowed only in the Main Ranch ponds by special arrangement through the office. You pay for each fish you catch, and no throw-backs are allowed. You clean and package your own fish for take-home. (For groups of 10 or more, we will provide a fishing attendant for an additional fee and will clean and package them for you, or serve them as a tasty entrée.)

When fishing, children 12 and under must be accompanied at all times by an adult.
