Sylvan
Dale has 3200 acres to roam, plus miles of trails through
adjacent Roosevelt National Forest. Our hiking
trails range from easy, level paths through the pastures
to rugged trails over rimrock and into the surrounding
ponderosa pine-covered mountains.
The
Ranch valley is located in a major geologic transition
zone, between the red sandstone hogbacks on the east
- the remains of an ancient desert - and the uplifted
granite formations of the Rocky Mountains to the west.
On our trails you can find Fountain, Ingleside, Satanka and
Lyons formations. Over 1.5 billion years of Earth's history is on display at the Ranch: from Precambrian granites and schists, through the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, to reminders of the Ice Age just 15,000 years ago.

with the office for a hiking trails map, along with
several naturalist pamphlets.
