Cowboy
Logic: An old cowboy once said, “There’s
a lot more to ridin’ a horse than just sittin’
in the saddle and lettin’ yer feet hang down.”
We’re
looking forward to sharing the “more” with
you! Whether you are an experienced rider or have
never set your foot in a stirrup, there are always new
trails to blaze in the area of horsemanship.
THE HEART-J
RIDER PROGRAM (ages 13 & up)
Heart-J Riders
(folks who have chosen the summer dude ranch riding
package), will meet at the barn Monday morning for
the 1st in a series of horsemanship classes geared to
your skill level. We ask that you confirm your
riding schedule for Monday afternoon at the stables
after the class. Sign up for subsequent riding
each day at the barn or at lunch.
Heart-J Riders
can enjoy any or all of the following horse activities:
- One Breakfast Ride
- Daily riding instruction
- Horse care
clinic
- Morning and afternoon trail rides
- Overnight Pack Trip to Cow Camp
- Participation in Friday
afternoon Gymkhana
We offer a
variety of rides geared to various skill levels and
a variety of times to accommodate your activity schedule.
Heart-J Riders must be qualified before they
can participate in cattle work and the overnight
pack trip. Should our program not fit your needs,
please talk with our Head Wrangler. Private lessons
are not included in the Heart-J Rider Package, but can
be made available if staffing and time permits (additional
charges apply).
Whether you
are an avid rider or not, the barn is a great place
to be. Grab a rope and brush up on your roping
skills. Relax on the “saloon” porch—Western
Horseman library available. You can learn a lot
just by watching a horsemanship class in progress.
You can participate in Barn Chores in the afternoons!
BECOME
A PARTNER WITH YOUR HORSE - DAILY RIDING INSTRUCTION
(subject to change)
MONDAY: Basic horse-sense and ground handling.
Skills that will allow you to lead and tie your horse—things
you will need to know if you want to help out at the
barn. Also you will practice the cues that are
necessary to communicate with your horse.
TUESDAY: Review of what you learned on Monday, and
advance from the walk to the “jog.” How
to cue your horse and sit in the saddle.
WEDNESDAY: If you are ready,
you will advance to the “lope” and fine
tune your skills to prepare for Thursday’s challenge!
THURSDAY:
Use your skills to negotiate the barrel pattern and
poles to prepare for the Gymkhana. For those not
going to Cow Camp, have fun "playing poker"
horseback on an unusual ride.
FRIDAY:
Put all your skills to the test and enter the Gymkana!
Note:
Our horsemanship classes allow you to advance at your own pace. What is important is that you feel comfortable and safe
as you develop your skills—no matter what your
level.
RIDING OPTIONS FOR THE OCCASIONAL RIDER
For the occasional
rider (non-rider
packages), we will do our best to accommodate you
for a pay-by-the-hour "Mosey Ride" during
the week. Please check with our Head Wrangler
for availability. For hourly rates, click
here.
